Caro ascoltatore o ascoltatrice,
Dear listener (male or female)

I already wrote you many letters and postcards from lots of different places: from the sea(side), from the mountains, from the lake. However, I still haven’t written you from the river. Today, I came (down) to a river not far from my house to have a swim.

Here in Turin it’s summer and it’s very hot: it’s (lit: there are) 30 degrees all day long. If you’re american (male or female), 30 degrees celsius correspond to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s a lot (lit: they are many)

Since there is no seaside (lit: we don’t have a sea) here in Turin where we can go and freshen up when it’s hot, we have to opt for other solutions, like lakes or rivers. This is why I came here.

The river is in the middle (meaning: inside) a wood. It’s actually not a big river, we could call it a “torrente” (stream). In Italian we have three words to describe the size of a watercourse: “ruscello” (small stream), torrent (medium-sized [stream]) and river. There are other words as well, like “fiumiciattolo” (creek), which is similar to “ruscello” and indicates a small river.

Naturalmente l’acqua è molto fredda e all’inizio l’impatto è doloroso. A me piace comunque entrare a capofitto, tuffandomi dentro.
I like to go to a spot (“a point”) in the river where there’s a pool of water, that is, an area where the water is deeper and you can swim inside. The water is very cold, of course, and the impact is very painful at first (lit: at the beginning). But I still like to dive in the water head first.

I’m not the only one swimming (lit: i’m not the only one to have a bath): there are at least ten (decina = about ten) people, among them families with kids who came to enjoy a day by the river to escape the heat of the city.

Now I came out of the water because after 15 minutes I was feeling cold and I didn’t feel like staying in. But I feel a lot better after this short swim.
