Caro ascoltatore o ascoltatrice,
l’estate è praticamente finita. Scrivo questa lettera il 20 settembre e quest’anno l’estate finirà il 23 settembre. L’estate in Italia finisce sempre il 22 o il 23 settembre. Non tutti sanno perché la fine dell’estate cade in uno di questi due giorni.
Dear listener (male or female),
summer is almost over. I’m writing this letter on the 20th of september and this year summer is going to end 23rd of September. Summer in Italy always ends on the 22nd or 23rd of September. Not everybody knows why the end of the summer falls on one of these two days.
In Australia o in Russia, per esempio, l’estate inizia il 1 giugno e finisce il 31 agosto. Questa si chiama “estate meteorologica”. In Italia però abbiamo la cosiddetta “estate astronomica”, che significa che per capire quando finisce l’estate dobbiamo guardare quand’è l’equinozio di settembre.
In Australia or Russia, for example, summer starts on June 1st and ends on August 31st. This is called “meteorological summer”. But (here) in Italy we have the so-called “astronomical summer”, which means that in order to know (lit: to understand) when summer ends we have to look at when the equinox is.
Sai che cos’è l’equinozio? L’equinozio è quel giorno dell’anno in cui il giorno e la notte hanno la stessa durata. C’è un equinozio all’inizio della primavera, il 20 o 21 marzo, e un equinozio a settembre, il 22 o il 23 settembre. Nel tuo paese quando inizia l’estate? All’equinozio o il 1 settembre?
Do you know what the equinox is? The equinox is that day of the year when the day and the night have the same length. There’s an equinox at the start of the spring, on March 20th or 21st and an equinox in September, on September 22nd or 23rd. When does summer beining in your country? On the equinox or on the 1st of September?
Tra tre giorni arriverà anche qui in Italia l’autunno, una stagione che a molte persone piace. Di solito chi ama questa stagione ama il colore arancione della foglie che cadono, è contento che faccia un po più fresco dopo l’estate, che di solito in Italia è caldissima.
In three days the fall/autumn is coming here well in Italy, too. (it is) a season that many people like. Usually (those) who like this season love the orange color of falling leaves and they are happy that (the weather) gets a little chillier after summer, which is usually very hot in Italy.
Altre persone associano invece l’autunno al ritorno al lavoro dopo le vacanze o al ritorno a scuola o all’università. Quando io andavo a scuola non mi piaceva mai l’idea di tornare sui banchi dopo mesi di pacchia. Però il mio compleanno è proprio il primo settembre, quindi per questo ho dei bei ricordi legati a questo mese.
Other people associate the fall with going back to work after (being on) vacation or going back to school or university. When I used to go to school I never liked the idea of going back to school (literally: to the [school] desks) after months of fun/gravy train/not having to do anything. But my birthdays is on September 1st, so I do have nice memories connected to this month.
